Ektocomms [MV]i[s]*ion
by [fito, fran, pili, san]After three years of hard work, we took our third anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on our mission/vision and gifted ourselves a written artifact of the principles that guide our journey.
We are passionate about learning by doing and we found that the best way for us to live that passion was founding a company of problem solvers focused on the challenges of Space Telecommunications.
We want to be judged by these yards:
- To be in charge
- Knowledge creation and sharing
- Meta iterative problem solving
- Sustainable work
## Be in charge / Integral solutions
Like the comms systems on which we work, Ektocomms also goes end-to-end. We are an all-terrain team that loves to get its wheels dirty with every aspect of the problem. We love to take care of as much parts of the problems our clients can delegate to us, and let them free mental space for their other challenges.
We love to take ill-defined problems and help trace a suitable action plan. We don't need tight specifications before taking responsibility and will accept high degrees of uncertainty.
### What we mean by ... ?
- All-terrain:
- Delegating a telecommunications subsystem to a highly skilled team capable of covering all aspects including planning, design, learning, prototyping, support, testing, manufacturing, measurements, among others and as well all physical, protocol, network layers of the problem/challenge.
- End-to-end:
- We proudly envision us as a team that can provide a "full stack" software solution (containerized, CI/CD, testing).
- Providing comprehensive and tangible solutions to complex challenges in satellite communications, "to step up/aiming to elevate/to leverage" the quality of our clients' business/services.
- end-to-end includes humans at the edges!
- We recognize that every technical problem is fundamentally a human problem, so we design solutions with human integration from the beginning.
## Knowledge creation and sharing
We love learning so we consider sharing our knowledge as part of our mission. We seek not to create dependence.
We know problems are inevitable but they are also soluble, so we make them part of the learning process by reducing the time between iteration and reflection. We thoughtfully conjecture, sometimes we fail, we learn and we share lessons transparently.
### What we mean by ... ?
- Problem:
- In the Popperian / Deutschian sense. Includes challenges, improvement desires. It shouldn't be interpreted as negative only.
- Dependence:
- This is a win-win in the long term because, as our clients grow, they give us better challenges to tackle.
- We encourage and help our clients to develop internal capacity.
## Meta-iterative problem solving
Before mindlessly executing the first solution that pops up in our heads, we consistently try to understand the context and rapidly iterate with the client to correct and simplify the solution.
We let the problem be our teacher.
## Sustainable work
We love what we do and want to continue doing it in the future. To achieve this, we prioritize our team's psychosocial health. This requires autonomy for self-organization and honesty to uphold clear straightforward communication. Finally, to ensure that our creation does not backfire, we must strive for simplicity.
### What we mean by ... ?
- Autonomy: from the Ancient Greek autónomos (self law).
- we self organize
- we don't do staff augmentation
- Honesty:
- no-bullshit engineering; no buzzwords.
- No cargo cult. We don't mimic the form of successful engineering; we strive to understand.
- Simplicity:
- Solutions as simple as possible.
- We know software complexity has the capacity for silently kill businesess.
- Psychosocial health:
- We assume our clients want us to fully apply our expertise to their service, and sometimes this implies saying no and offering alternatives.
